Florry – First it was a movie, then it was a book

Florry’s “First It Was a Movie, Then It Was a Book” is the kind of track that grabs you by the collar and drags you through its grimy, glorious chaos. From the opening distorted guitar chords to the relentless electronic drum beat, it’s a messy, magnetic collision of country twang and punk energy. Francie Medosch’s talk-sung delivery—somewhere between Courtney Barnett and a sleep-deprived poet—winds through the track like a late-night confession, while Jon Cox’s pedal steel swoops in halfway through like a drunken angel.

The song builds and sprawls, layering ramshackle rhythms with a guitar riff that refuses to quit, climbing higher even as the whole thing threatens to collapse. It’s the kind of track that makes you want to hit repeat before it’s even over, if only to figure out how they pulled it off.

It’s the latest preview of Sounds Like…, Florry’s upcoming LP (out May 23 via Dear Life Records), recorded in Asheville with Colin Miller (MJ Lenderman, Wednesday). If this is any indication, the album will be a ragged, brilliant mess—the good kind, where every loose thread just makes it more interesting.
